Does It Hurt?- H.D Carlton

⭐ - 4

🌶 - 4.5

Ok, so, hear me out. I enjoyed this book, a lot. And think it is simply a great read because it is not like anything I have ever read before, in my life! What is messed up? Oh yeah, in certain areas of this book, most definitely it had areas that made me think WTF? But not in a "I'm gonna put this down now" way, because not once did I put this book down. In fact I spent two days binging it because I was so intrigued by what was going on.

I know there are some negative ratings about this book and I do understand why, due to the content that is within, however, if you know what you're getting yourself in for, then I don't think you will be disappointed. At the end of the day, you chose an H.D Carlton book. You will NOT be getting a rainbows and butterflies college romance from this woman. You will be getting the rough and dirty, weird and questionable story with a very morally great main character. And I personally LOVE an H.D Carlton book, and will recommend her to anyone that is into her area of dark romance. With that being said, if you do choose to read this book (or any others from H.D Carlton) then please read the trigger warnings beforehand and make sure it is something you are ok with! Think of your mental health. You matter. You always matter.

The main characters - Enzo and Sawyer - are completely different from one another, personalities, place of origin..everything. But one night, they meet and they do the spice. And so our plot begins. Sawyer has a painful background (please do check triggers) and is trying to escape that area of her life, therefore leaving for another country and trying to find an identity - taking rather than creating. And here enters our Italian MMC, Enzo. Enzo is a strong willed man who has a thunder like temper and is able to hold a grudge for a duration of a book, whilst simultaneously building an attraction towards Sawyer, through said temper.

Now the tricky part is choosing who to side with, because they both have the right to feel and act precisely how they do, and at times, it may become a little irritating (more on Sawyer's end) but nevertheless, it all still adds up to create the messed up relationship that is Enzo and Sawyer.

Sawyer struggles to tell Enzo why she has done what she's done due to her struggles in life and not wanting anyone to know who she is or what has happened, and therefore strings along the anger of Enzo and continuing the debt of paying him back for the "troubles" she has caused him. Through this, we learn a lot about each character and see where their faults begin to connect them to one another and also how they slowly begin to let their guards down and begin to question if they can fully let the other in or not.

And then we have the lighthouse and the last 150-200 pages which caused me to:

1. Never want to go to a lighthouse alone

2. Never trust what seems like a lonely elderly man

3. Go near water. Ever.

It was a total mix of emotions throughout this entire book and I really enjoyed the ride that I was sent on...maybe not as much as Sawyer did, but I'll let you figure that one out on your own. Because the spice? My goodness was it SPICY.

H.D Carlton is quite probably one of my favourite authors because she is not afraid to write something that is screwed up, is questionable in the favour of who you are as a person and is just so addictive in her plot creation and character arch's that you're up till three in the morning finishing her stories because you can't stop. No matter what page I am on, I cannot stop reading her books because something questionable happens and I need to know how it follows, who is the one to be the 'hero' and simply, how it all ties together and will end.

I highly recommend reading Does It Hurt and really giving it a chance! Get to know the characters, understand their backgrounds and go on their wild adventure with them. And please look out for sharks.

And please, check your trigger warnings! Always look after your mental health. You matter more. You always matter.

Let me know what you think of this book if you read it and if you have any other recommendations for me!

Happy reading guys and gals!x
